The first known rollerskate was developed in the mid to late 1700s. Rollerskating atop a platform with a wheel in each of it’s four corners became a happy pasttime in the 1800s. The first roller rink was opened at a resort in Rhode Island in 1866. It was marketed for all genders to do together in a Victorian-era time when young dating couples would otherwise be rigorously chaperoned. By the 1900s, rollerskates were being mass produced. Contemporary skating has grown to include other roller sports; in-line skating, skateboarding, ice skating. Though it’s never been recognized as an Olympic sport, rollerskating is still the most fun!
The Union Hardware Company in Torrington, CT was originally established in 1854 for the production of ice skates and added rollerskates to it’s catalog in 1876. The Company grew to produce many iron, steel, and wood products through the years from tools to sporting goods. Rollerskates and golf clubs were it’s most popular items.
