Gumball vending machines were invented in the late 1800s by the Thomas Adams Gum Company. They were filled with traditional Tutti Fruity gumballs, placed on subway platforms in NYC and covered with animated figures. The Ford Gum and Machine Company in 1934 created the classic red, carousel design. These machines still remain popular today. Many are found private homes across the globe. You won’t however find 1 penny machines. Machines today are made to accommodate not only gumballs, but also nuts, candy and toys.
