Though not recorded in the US Office of Patents, it is believed James Reynolds and Paul Schroth Sr. invented the clock radio in the 40s. In the decades following, old-fashioned clock radios could be found on nearly every bedside table around America, putting us to sleep with music and radio shows and getting us up for work in the morning. They came in many shapes, styles and sizes. The analogue units from the 60’s weren’t very stylish and the clock parts were prone to malfunction. The 70s became the heyday of the clock radio with the advent of the flipping-digit clocks. The 80s saw the electronic digital clock radio. The 2010’s saw a dwindling market as technology changed and clock radios were discontinued. Very few are still manufactured and sold. The smartphone has taken over.
