History of the Brownie: Brownie was a series of cameras made by Eastman Kodak out of Rochester, NY 1900-1950’s. Kodak’s goal was to produce a camera that required limited skills to use and put cameras into the hands of amateurs. Extensively marketed to children, the Brownies brought the point-and-shoot snapshot to American families. The original, made of a simple cardboard box fitted with lenses, sold for $1.00. The Brownie also went to war. Small and light enough to store in a soldier’s pack, the Brownie allowed daily life in the trenches to be documented. A later model, the Hawkey on sale here, was formed out of moulded Bakelite and sold like hot-cakes in the 1950’s.
